I once heard an interview with U2, in which the band members were answering questions submitted by their fans. One question for the Edge was a common one for a guitarist – “What kind of guitar is your favorite?” Bono, suffering from a touch of lead singer syndrome, jumped in and answered the question, basically saying that it doesn’t matter which guitar you use as long as the music is authentic. He recounted a tale of someone in a music store asking the Edge which guitar he liked out of the ones he was looking at, and the Edge said, “I like the black one.”
Being a guitar player myself, I rolled my eyes and thought, Bono you’re a nitwit. The only reason the Edge, one of the most successful guitarists in the world, would say such a thing is that he was already looking at the best guitars in the best store in town.
The same can be said of podcasting. While it is important to have the best, most crystal clear sound you can afford with the best equipment available to you, it’s not about the mic. If your content stinks, a great mic will just emphasize the stench of the content.
