The power of a microphone in the hands of a leader can change the world. That’s why we’re here, isn’t it? To change the world? I get so sick of hearing that phrase – it seems so hyperbolic, but look around you. Podcasting is having a revolutionary effect on the world. No longer are we held captive to the few voices that they let be on the radio. With a microphone and an internet connection, you can send your message to the world!
I’ve been entranced by audio my whole life. I love music. I was a teenager when I first got into playing around with audio production. I remember looking at a sound mixer and being mesmerized by all the knobs, sliders, buttons, and lights. I wanted to know how it worked. I wanted to know how I could make it work. I was 19 when the movie Pump Up The Volume came out. It starred Christian Slater as a socially awkward teenager who had a pirate radio show where he would talk and spin some records – and it just so happened that people were listening and they felt like he understood them, and he created a movement. Now, I wouldn’t recommend the movie because there are some rather explicit scenes – certainly in some of what he says on the air. This was back near the beginning of the shock jock era. No, the shock wasn’t what intrigued me. It was the idea of being able to reach people from a microphone in my basement. The amazing thing is that in that movie, he could only transmit up to a few miles. But today, with a podcast, you can reach the whole world.
What will you say?
